An employer of mine had me do oil changes on his and his girlfriends cars on occasion. While changing her oil I noticed that it was very black and thick so I asked her why it was so low and dirty. She answered that she had no Idea because she always put a quart of oil in every time the oil light went on !!!
Me and a brother in-law bought mazda pickups at the same time, I change my oil every 2500 to 3000 miles, he changed his whenever (not very often) by 50,000 miles my truck was still perfect, his trucks lifters rattled and it used oil, at 100,00 miles my truck ran like new and his was shot. I don't understand people.
Ok, I'm a regular oil changer too but amongst some friends of mine, we laugh because we all know this one person who, just like rickers described, hardly ever changed her oil and only added oil when the light came on. This was a Datsun 200SX. She bought it new and ran it over 150,000 miles without any major engine work. We just shake our heads over it but I guess there are always exceptions.
I'm trying out the Mobil 1 Extended Performance motor oil. Recommended for up to 15,000-mile or one-year oil change intervals. If your vehicle is still under warranty, don't.

I don't think a warranty has anything to do with or without using synthetic oil by the way. Some models come from the factory with synthetic oil. Yup, they work great, one year oil changes. A little expensive however.
BUT - you still have to change that oil filter (and then all that synthetic oil comes gushing out anyways, unless you're real quick).

I've used synthetic in my motorcycle (since new), use synthetic in my wifes car and one daughters (2006 and 2007) the rest of what I like to refer to as the fleet (4 more cars) all get semi synthetic and are on the 3,000 mile program. I've read some interesting articles about switching a high mileage vehicle over to synthetic and it causing some problems, so I figure the synthetic will sufice. Years back all my cars were on the Pennzoil 10/30 and Fram filter diet with the same schedule as you quote (2500-3000 miles). I bought my filters and oil in bulk so the cost to do an oil change was negligible. I have never experienced an oil related failure in any of my cars and I've been driving for 41 years.

I have a good friend that's a mechanic in a local Ford dealership. He told me that if a lease car comes in for an oil change the service manager has told them to service the car with synthetic oil even if the vehicles owner asked for a regular $28.00 dollar oil change. They don't charge the customer the price for a synthetic oil change but don't tell them they used synthetic either. I guess they have that much faith in synthetics.

Auto manufacturers normally require owners to follow their service intervals regardless if you use a full synthetic, semi-synthetic or conventional motor oil if you want to maintain warranty of related engine systems and parts.
According to Mobil: Change your oil filter when you change your engine oil. Special filters, or more frequent oil filter changes earlier then 1 year or 15,000 miles is not required with the use of Mobil 1 Extended Performance.
