The long term implicatons of how wrong this could go so very wrong is mind boggling!!

"Data recorders, better known as "black boxes," will be required in all new cars beginning September 2014 if federal regulators get their way.

Black boxes in cars raise privacy concerns | abc7.com

To me a 2004 Suburban is a "new" car but until I need one my 1993 Suburban will do just fine.

You just wait.....to force all vehicles off the road that don't have Black boxes either a box will be retro-fitted or fine will be levied that will be so expensive that scrapping the older car will be the only choice!

I'm not a fan of this idea. I haven't read the article yet, but my guess is you'd see the potential for increases or decreases in insurance rates, especially if there was "active" monitoring. But it would definitely be used for accident reconstruction, and data. I wonder how much support you'll really see for this though, I have a good feeling that constituents will be directly opposed to this measure...and as vocal as people have been in recent years, there's definitely going to be some public outcry.

I support this 100%. In fact, I signed up for Snapshot with Progressive Insurance whereby they monitored my driving for 1 month (and I in turn got a 30% discount on my insurance).

These black boxes can be used to punish those jackasses that drive recklessly and cause accidents.

Monitor me, please. And can you assign an government agent to follow me around. I wouldn't mind some personal protection.

If you don't do anything wrong, what are you afraid of?

Hmmmm, I've been involved in one fender bender in my life...and it was the result of my own high school stupidity. Same time, I enjoy driving fast...I'd be perfectly ok with this, if it was used to give us some additional automotive freedom, such as an Autobahn here in the States!!! Unless there's something similar used, i should just be a voluntary program such as used for the insurance premium deductions now.

Agreed. I don't really have anything to hide to be honest. Although one of the downsides that may arise is that insurance can use it against you in court, but only if they are really anal about it.

I don't think this is particularly alarming. Most semi-tractor trailers have had these sort of computer devices installed for years. They chart everything from speed, to hours driven, to mileage and economy.

Personally, I hope the day comes when every vehicle comes with a "breathalyzer" of sorts. Booze-breath = no start. Driving is a privilege, after all, not a right.

Are you serious? Of course they would use it against you in court.

You're quick to give away personal privacy for monetary gain. Shameful.

So quick to throw away personal freedoms...

So you wouldn't have a problem with a camera in your house, or a "black box" installed in your computer that could be monitored by gov't officials?
