Are any available? It seems like the only non-full sized pickup trucks left are Tacoma sized. No more mini trucks like the old Toyota pickup or Ford Courier.
With gas at $4, any rumors of mini trucks making a come back?
I wish they would. I am celebrating 20 years with my 1993 Nissan Hardbody pickup. It has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned, and I have never wished for more truck. It gets 25 MPG all the time. I heard a rumor that Hyundai is studying a pickup for the US market. I think a Hardbody sized truck would sell like hotcakes. They are the perfect size for do it yourselfers.
I saw a nice looking Ford Ranger today and mentioned to my wife that it would be a nice size truck to have (maybe with a full size back seat though, and not the jump seat).
I'd like to see Mazda sell a pickup in the US again, and I dont mean a rebadged Ford. Back in the late 80's they made some sharp looking B2600 SE-5 pickups.
I think that because of the new high mileage big trucks available, many people would rather drive the larger trucks. I think the car companies are wrong and are underestimating the market.
I do not like that toyota make the small truck with a 4 cylinder still, but they do not make it available with 4WD. Only available in the stripped model like they would be purchased for a business fleet or something. What is UP with that. The 6 cyl. tacomas just don't get real great fuel economy. Not to mention they are expen$ive.

My 4x4 Ranger with the 4.0 V6 only gets 15-22mpg, close to the same as the full sized F150 V8! The 4 banger 2WD version got 30, and was very popular as shop delivery/pickup vehicles. Unfortunately people wanted bigger and bigger pickups, so the last of the small pickups is no longer made. If you want good gas mileage you will need to look at cars or small SUVs like the new Subaru Crosstrek.

My VW pickup still gets 50 mpg, as it did in 1980. (No opec required)
I frequently haul over 1000#, and often pull a utility trailer. I have hauled 2700# cargo in it, but that's not recommended.
If I have a serious load, I use my 1st Gen Cummins 4x4 dually 18mpg.
heavier yet? I have my Mack ~ 9 mpg
I don't think they will offer 50 mpg mini pickups for USA, but is certainly possible, and is popular in most of the rest of the world.
You can always make your own from an '80's pickup donor body and a VW TDI engine. ~$3000 for a turn-key project.
I saw a '70's King Cab Datsun today and was thinking similar...
We made full electric Mini Pickups from both a Datsun and Ford Courier in 1974.

Actually you can get a 4x4 Tacoma with a 4-cylinder, either manual or automatic, but in Regular or Xtra Cab configuration only. Also available in SR5 trim. Not very many of these typically in stock at local dealers, though.
Double Cab 4X4s aren't available with the 4, but the Base 2WD & Pre-Runner Double Cabs are, including SR5 trim. A check of online local dealer inventories show several 4-cylinder Pre-Runners in stock.
The thing with the Tacoma is it is essentially the same truck as 2006. I would considering buying one but I KNOW the next year model with be completely redesigned and I'd hate that.
