Hyundai is the only manufacturer that has built a baby version of one of their full size models. The first thing that I noticed about the Elantra was that it is baby Sonata, and a cute one at that.
In addition to the poor resale on Hyundai/Kia, look at what happens if you do not replace that timing belt, on time, every time. Try a google search for Hyundai timing belt failure.... and the cost of a new engine because Hyundai does not warranty the engine if you didn't explicitly follow the timing belt replacement schedule. They use what is known as an interference engine. Ever wonder why so few 10 year old Hyundai/Kia's are still around?

Timing belt? I'm fairly certain they are all on timing chains and have been for some time. Most manufacturers have interference engines and quite frankly, I've seen an older Hyundai (my 2002 Accent) go over the exact scheduled belt replacement without any problems. I also see a ton of older Hyundai's/KIA's on the road (particularly if your 10 year cut off ends at 2004).

All Hyundai's and Kia's use TIMING CHAINS only. I checked that throughly before looking any further.
There is no interference engine in the line up with a timing belt. I'm certainly not going to lose any sleep over a timing chain breaking or jumping a tooth. I've probably driven close to a million miles so far without that happening.
There is also no PLASTIC HOUSING Oil Filter.....which some other manufacturer's continue to use.

I just went to Hyundai's website and looked up maintenance schedules. 2011 Accent - 60k timing BELT replacement. Elantra 2010 still had a belt, Tucson 2009 still a belt... Maybe they have finally got rid of a major headache they had?
Basically; no they and some other have never built the reputation that Honda and Toyota have over the years. That means people seek those vehicle more in market.
