I have a chip key without the buttons and a broken one with the buttons to unlock the car. I keep the one with buttons in my pocket and use the other to drive with. Never locked out.

I was a manufacturer rep in the 80's and traveled via car a lot. That was before cell phones so I stopped at pay phones all the time. More than once I got out to make a call and then realized my keys were in the ignition locked in the car, so I would have to borrow a wire coat hanger from someone and break in.

Finally , I took a spare door and ignition key and drilled the holes out so a 1/4 inch license plate bolt would pass through them. Then I taped the two keys on the back of the license plate and passed the license plate bolts through the keys, securing them to the back of the plate. They were hidden and all I had to do in an emergency was use a dime to remove the plate and then use the spare keys to get into the car. It saved me more than once.

The only thing I worried about was if someone was stealing license plates they would find my keys and be able to drive the car away.

Yes, I keep extra keys for two Cadillacs. Don't need an extra one for the '95 Lincoln because I can unlock the car using the touch pads above the door handle.

i never carry the spare key to the car i'm driving, and it's been decades since i've needed to resort to a wire hanger or slim jim to get into my car, knock on wood. That said, i'm usually with the wife and she carries her keys as well, and if for some reason we both lock our keys in (difficult as we use the remote to lock the car), then we'll just take a seat and wait for AAA to come on over.

Just keep another key in another pocket. Why I would keep it in wallet? Btw my spare keys are in house of a truck driver and sometime would need to wait for days for spare key.
