If I could have afforded it, I'd never have done any car work. My dad made me help with the trucks, when I wanted to be hunting or shooting, so I grew up hating it. Freezing my hands, etc. . I also dont like having to learn stuff, just to have that knowledge become useless in a few years, when I buy a different model or when the maker changes things. This is why I hate computers even worse.
Michigan cars. Working on these cars means if you replace one part the majority of parts connected to it are severly rusted and also need to be replaced. Also when it takes an hour to put an oil filter on because they put the P/S hoses right in front of it and the cross member runs right underneath making it so you need to be a contortionist to get it in.
Down here it just gets too hot during the summer. You'll be drenched in sweat and have gnats in your face. I get too frustrated.
Now if its a pleasant 65 degrees outside that's different.
You are correct sir! I live in Palm Bay, Florida. I spent 3 hours replacing a starter in my 98 Corolla last weekend. I was soaked and miserable while doing it. On the bright side, a mechanic was going to charge me almost $350.00. I did it for $95.00.
I put food on the table for over 40 years turning wrenches, the thrill is gone..! Retired now, still do a few minor things on my own vehicles, but I made my money, time to let someone else make theirs...
Started messing with cars in the early sixties. You could get underneath a car with a couple of combination wrenches, maybe 3 or 4 sockets with a ratchet a few extensions, a couple of screwdrivers and a set of adjustable pliers and basically be able to take almost the whole car apart. I just got done helping a friend restore a 69 Chevelle that he has been working on for quite a few years. It was great being able to work on something without computers - sensors and the rest. He has an issue with seeing colors so I did all the wiring (new Painless harness) and was reminded how basic these cars actually were. Especially those without power windows, A/C etc.
My girlfriend at the time needed a new fuel pump for her aged Volvo. I say to her in perfectly plain English; "Sue - take the old part to the parts place; say as follows - 'give me another one of these.'
I get under her damn car again and start wrenching away, getting rust and crap in my eyes...and the thing doesn't fit.
"Sue? did you do what I told you?"
Heh, heh. Of course not. "But he looked it up in the book!"
Perhaps this should be posted in the "relationships" area.
