what do you recommend? under 6k...track day/ sunday driver...prefer sports sedan but 2 seater would be fine...

I like rear dive, manual, and German most of all, but would consider an American brand.

thanks!

the answer is ALWAYS Miata,

That being said, a german sports sedan that is a track toy? Dont see that request too often. for 6k your probably looking at an E46 325/330 or some sort of e34/39 525/530/540??

sounds like an early generation Miata (perhaps older s2000) for the 6k price for a solid track/fun car unless those brands our out. Not sure what sort of older 3 series that $$ will buy; you can definitely get an older mustang if that trips your trigger (easy to mod for a 1/4 mile, i'm not familiar enough with them for their cornering prowess)

I agree that spending part or all of your budget on a Miata will likely give you the most grins for the green.

You might, possibly find a good 2002 for about $6K. But it's a tin-top and the Miata is a ragtop. But if you really prefer a sport-sedan, well the 2002 is still hard to beat. I would rather have a $6K 2002 (quite good) than spend the same money on an E36 or newer Bimmer (where your money would buy a rather dog-eared specimen).

More of a weekend car than a track day car, honorable mention to a good VW Cabrio.

BTW ignore the peanut gallery's jeers that the Cabrio and the Miata are "Hairdresser's cars". They just resent being outrun by them on track days. Particularly the Miata, properly set up and driven.

Early 70's postal jeep.

Inline 6.

RWD.

Auto is halfway to a manual.

You'll have 5K left over to visit Germany in style and rent a Porsche.

Yes, Miatas, except that they look as gay as it gets.
You ever heard of Mercur XR4TI? It's almost German. I think, it has some blood from famous Ford Cosworth...
I drove that Mercur. That car can be quite crazy.

The cars were hand assembled and built entirely by Karmann Coachworks in Rheine, Germany.[1] Unlike with the Scorpio, the XR4Ti didn't carry over the Sierra badge from Europe, since at the time it was also being used by General Motors in North America for two completely different vehicles: the GMC Sierra and the similar sounding Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. When first introduced, the XR4Ti had a starting price of US$16,503 (equal to about $37,082 today).
The XR4Ti was distinguished mechanically by its turbocharged Ford Lima 2.3 L 4-cylinder SOHC engine and independent rear suspension, and stylistically by its large bi-plane spoiler (replaced in later years with a single rear spoiler). It came with either the C3 3-speed automatic transmission or the Ford Type 9, 5-speed manual transmission. Mechanically, it differed from the European Ford Sierra XR4i, which had a 2.8l Ford Cologne V6. Airbag legislation for the 1990 model years and weak sales as are frequently cited as the cause for the Merkur range to be discontinued.
