So one of my kids - living in Omaha - is kind of looking for a "beater with a heater" to use for the winter commute. She ran across a Craigslist ad for a cheap Escort, boldly proclaiming "Low Miles!" Turns out in has "only 158k" for mileage.

Apparently people have different standards for "low mileage." The seller of this car definitely has a different definition than do I!

What do you consider to be Low Miles? Is it constantly going up, depending on the year of the car, or is there a point at which - regardless of the age of the vehicle - it is no longer low miles?

For me, anything over 100k is no longer low miles, regardless of age.

You'd have to know more than mileage to get a decent assessment of the worthiness of the vehicle.
How well was it maintained? Did the previous owner changed the oil every 40K miles?
How many cold starts? A car with 100K miles that was driven twice a day for 50 miles on an uncrowded freeway has less wear than a taxi with 40K miles on it.

I have the same problem.

I also entertaining the idea of buying a semi-beater for the winter and I fully realize that 12k per year is average but I just can't look at anything with over 100k seriously. For example, I was looking for a Jeep Grand Cherokee around 2003-04 and it is very difficult to find anything with less than 100k. If you do the math a 10yr old car should have about 120k but psychologically... I just cant.

To be clear, I'm not at all afraid of higher mileage vehicles. In fact, for a guy like me they can be a gold mine. It just amuses/annoys me when somebody claims that his car - with nearly 160,000 miles - is "low mileage."

I once bought a Chevrolet Caprice that had 19k and considered it low mileage.

Well... if a car was driven less than 12k per year, wouldn't it be considered as a car with low miles?

I would agree with this. Anything less then 12k miles a year would be a low mileage car.

Not in my book. If that were the case, you could have a 1982 Oldsmobile with 325,000 miles, and refer to it as a low-mileage car.

It seems to me that, regardless of its age, there's a point where a vehicle simply can't be referred to as "low mileage."

...and that's why I started this thread/discussion.

Low miles is low miles. My GTO is a 2005 with 64K on it (a low ~8K a year). That is low miles, both in average per year and cumulative. If I had a '68 GTO, with an average of 8000 miles a year, would that be considered low miles with a total of 360K on it?

IMO anything with over 100K on it, regardless of age, is no longer a low mileage vehicle.

I get what you are saying but I think you have to consider the age of the vehicle.

On the opposite end of the spectrum... if you have 1982 car with 50k... i would have to assume that the car was sitting for an extended period of time which in my opinion is not good thing either.
