I drive a rental as if it were my own car... a new car I purchased. I dont abuse it in any way. I even dodge potholes and rough pavement. Maybe thats weird, I dont know.

Reading this makes me be sure to never purchase a rental car for myself.

My aunt did last year... a 2009 VW Jetta... seems to be fine though, never had any problems. It had 23K miles, probably around 35K now.

One car I recently rented, a 2011 Ford Fusion, there had already been bumper scratches and some damage and it only had 6000 miles... rental place knew of this, said they had not had time to fix it. No matter, as long as it got me to where I wanted to go.

I just remembered, the only thing I've ever done in a rental was back in December 2000 I rented a new 2001 Grand AM to go visit family for Chrsitmas and to party with some friends for New Years. I did take it up to 105 mph where the mph limiter kicked in. That's about it. Other than toting around a big bottle of Jack Daniels in the trunk. But that's another story.

I've done 100 mph in a rental--I had a room reserved, and I was cycling between 90 and 100, trying to get there. When the cop stopped me, I was thankfully at the lower end of that scale.

I also drove the thing out of state without telling them about it.

Well lets see. I rented and Audi TT once and took it to the auto X track and burned a set of tires off. I had a Grand Prix in CA that went off-roding through the desert more than once. Oh then there was a Ford Festiva that caught a bunch of air.

The first one and the last one were while I was stationed in Germany.

Oh I forgot about the VW Jetta TDI that I took from Germany to Italy. The little thing sat on the red line at 260 KPH across 2 countries and never missed a beat.
