The supreme court has ruled that "loud exhaust" is protected under freedom of speech, and laws against it are unconstitutional.

I love the rumble of my V8 Mustang...and judging by the compliments i get when i drive it, i'm sure other's do as well. Even cops give me compliments on the way it sounds.

Not all of us think of our cars as appliances

One of my biggest pet peeves OP, I agree with you. There is nothing pleasant about vehicle noise. It's almost as if there's a segment of people who get off annoying as many people as possible around them. I don't understand it.

Sure there is.

Ferrari V12? Porsche 911 at WOT? Formula 1 racer at 10000 RPM?? Lamborgini? Corvette ZR1 engine?? The sound of a turbo blow-off valve between shifts? Ford roots supercharger blower whine?

All beautiful sounds. I've had the pleasure of driving quite a few exotics and even modern muscle and their exhaust notes sound so great I have no need for a radio.

If you want to talk about a fart muffler on a civic, than I agree with you...

You must understand it, because you're doing it with this comment.

That's my take on it too. The more people in the area the more of these A-holes there are.

I guess I'm an A-hole because I, like Boston Mike, love a lot of various vehicle sounds. From the rumble of a tuned V8 to the ripping sounds of a racing V12 or turbo I6. I like the sounds my cars make. I'm not gonna sit by someone's window late at night and rev the heck out of it, but I love the sound of a tuned V8 in tunnels or under overpasses.

YOU "love" various vehicle sounds. You are an A-hole because you inflict those sounds on everyone else. End of story. Why should people sitting in their living room be subjected the the noise you "love" when you drive by their homes?

What if I told you I "Love" the sound of fog horns and decided to mount one on the back of my pickup truck?

The same people who whine about automobile noise ignore the fact that aircraft are louder, and so trains, police and firefighter sirens, or just neighbors, or dogs. I can fall asleep like a baby listening to traffic noise, but not through the barking of the dog next door

Has anybody ridden the Subway in NY?
