Very rarely, and just when I'm at a stop light or something I'll send a quick message if I have to. I hardly ever talk on the phone while driving either.
Same here. Once the light turns green, the phone is put down.
Twenty five or so responses here....less than a handful admit to some sort of texting while in their cars, but no-one flat out says "sure, I text when I am driving."
Next time you are out in your car, look at the number of people who are texting. At least one third. Maybe one-half.
I live in a state where it is fine to use your cell phone for a voice conversation while driving. Maybe that has something to do with the 'extension' to texting that a LOT of people make.
It seems to be everywhere. And the police (wrongly) seem to ignore it except when they have a specific sting set up to catch people, which is pretty easy.
I see it everywhere.
That's because, at least here, the police are also busy texting when they're on the road. I've been stopped when the cop would get a call/text and he'd drop what we were talking about to answer it.
I don't text in the traditional sense while driving, but because of the way that my phone and my car's Bluetooth system interact, I do occasionally respond--verbally--to texts while I drive.
If I receive a text while driving, the car's Bluetooth system will turn down the volume on my audio system and/or my GPS (it is all integrated), and will announce, "Message from XXXX. Please say read or ignore."
If I say "read", then it recites the text to me.
Then it asks, "Do you wish to respond?"
If I say yes, then I can dictate a response.
After I dictate my response, it reads my response back to me, and asks if I want to add more, send it, change it, or cancel it.
This process is no more distracting than talking to a passenger, but I frequently choose to ignore the texts anyway.
Ain't technology wonderful?

Don't text while driving, walking, running, sleeping or awake. I see no need for texting at all.
But how would I tell my kid in the living room to bring me a drink to my bedroom?
How would I tell my friend that another friend is boring me to death while she's right there?
How would I receive a booty call?
How would I be able to contact someone during church?
How would I tell someone to come save me from some schmo who is trying to talk to me at a bar?
I jest, I jest.
