I generally buy cars and keep them until they no longer run. The last new car I purchased was a 1995 Mazda Protege that I got rid of 3 years ago. At that time, it had over 213K miles on it. It served me well all the years I had it.
I now have a 2009 Toyota Corolla that I purchased from a used car dealership back in January, which had 40,8XX miles when I took possession of it. My drive to work is only 3 miles one way so I expect to keep this car for a long time. The car currently has 42,200 or so miles on it.
Never bought a new car. Have only owned 3 cars so far, and I guess I'm fairly young still. I need to be making a lot more money before I decide whether or not to buy a brand new car. They're expensive, and if I do buy a new one, I might as well run it till the wheels fall off, because the value depreciates quickly with a new car.
The original question was a little vague -- "new" can mean "hot off the assembly line" or "used, but new to me."
My first car (1982 Corolla) was bought used, 5 years old; I kept it another 5 years (10 years total) before selling it to a friend so I could buy something larger.
My second car (1992 Camry) was bought "new" (actually a demonstrator) and I kept it for 9 years, until it was totalled in an accident.
My third car (2002 Camry) was bought new and I kept it for 12 years, until I decided to replace it so that I could finish paying off the next one before my wife's car came due for replacement. (One car payment at a time, please!)
My fourth car (2014 Camry) was bought new. I hope to keep it for a good long time.
Not vague. The OP meant brand new car, not a new/used car.
I buy a new one every 2 years, although I might keep my new BMW longer.
Every 2 years?Seems like an expensive way to do it as you get to eat a lot of the depreciation of the car. do you have some trick of avoiding this financial liability or just dont think/care about it?.
I dont buy new cars and tend to buy 2-4 year old well maintained low mileage used cars that can be up to 30% cheaper than a new one, i usually run them to around 200K-300K
