Are your highways like that? Tell me people here should always follow the 2-second rule at 60mph which is 176 feet between cars or 10+ car lengths after watching that vid. Those rules should not apply everywhere so it's not "simple".
It is simple... very simple. If traffic is going 60, and the posted limit is 70.. well it's quite obvious no one is passing or should be. All lanes are utilized then. Once the FLOW of traffic picks back up and slower cars are moving to the right , faster to the left and things start FLOWING.. then the things can spread out , and people can start passing. It's so simple why do people just not get this.
I agree. Most people who are in the "passing lane" are exceeding the speed limit by at least 15 mph. The other night I watched an econobox get pulled over by flying in the passing lane. The people with entitlement issues think the left lane is for them to speed and push everyone to the right lane.
I love when I'm driving in the left lane about 7-8 miles above the limit and I have someone next to me in the right lane. People tailgate me and expect me to speed up and get back over in the right...nope. When I can get over I will but I'm not changing my driving habits to please someone else...this is why we have speed limits that APPLY TO ALL
If you can't/won't make the pass, just put on your indicator and SLOW DOWN 2-3mph for a few seconds and pull back in behind the car you're pacing.
That way you're not breaking the law OR hogging the passing lane.

There are some places like the LIE in NY that are too congested (while doing 60mph) most times to keep the left lane clear. It would basically just cause traffic and dangerous situations with so many cars merging together in middle and right lanes.
It's as silly as keeping 2 car lengths as a safe distance with this kind of congestion. It's just not practical.
Sometimes I think sticklers for these laws just live out in the sticks or somewhere like it.
the lie is a parking lot and not typical of most highways

Except the limit there is 55 and everyone is doing over that already. What it is, is 3 lanes, plus HOV, of equal opportunity with that amount of vehicles.
What I'm saying is 1 rule does not fit each and every highway, and shouldn't.

It should, it isn't about the highway it's about the traffic that is on it. I understand what your saying , and again that is just common sense.
I travel the lenghth of I696 here in Michigan for my daily work commute. During rush hour it's three and four lanes of congested traffic, its obvious all lanes are being used.
did you feel the need to dredge this old thread back up cause the other one was locked ?
