It is usually an evaporation system leak in Ford vehicles.

Being a 1999 Ford Taurus SE, I would check into the fuel system, fuel filter and spark plugs. Fuel filters are recommended for replacement every 15,000 miles. They should be accompanied with a complete fuel system to clean out the throttle body, intake valves, and fuel line at the same time. Spark plug replacements should be replaced every 30,000 miles.

Fuel filter change every 30K miles according to Ford.

Replace plugs at 30K for Villager model only. Taurus plugs get changed at 100K miles.

Don't hold your breath for the dry gas to fix it.

I have never heard of a code that specifically says "need to add gas dryer."

At least you are spending very little money on this dubious guess.

Very dubious that this will turn off the check engine light.

The parts stores can give you the worst recommendations when it comes to parts as they all of a sudden become mechanics with poor advice.
