Hi guys, so my beloved passat (2004) gave up on me 3 days ago and the transmission requires replacement. Apparently the transmission clutch is damaged - i never knew there was a clutch in the transmission too.
The car's body and the engine are in a very good condition - have had it regularly served, no check engine light or leakage. It has about 150k+ miles on it.
I've posted it online for sale but have had no response so far. I was wondering whether anyone know how I could get the best sale for it? Its definitely for a mechanic who can fix it and keep it moving for another 10 years. Its far from being a junk vehicle.
I contacted one junk yard and they were offering $500 which is way below my expectation/desire. Anyone with suggestions/perspective?

With those miles and the issue you're having I'd say $500 is about right. You say "posted it online" but "online" is a big place. Where did you post it? My guess for your lack of response would be that you have it listed too high. I am making an assumption, because you also don't say what you listed it for. I would try Craigslist, but I think you'd be lucky to get $600 or $700 out of it.
Try calling around to independent VW repair shops. Some buy such cars, and strip them of usable parts to sell their customers who can't afford factory new parts, or hard to find older parts. I know of a Volvo shop that has done this for years. Always had 2 or 3 cars they were parting out.
You can get $1000 for that car, just put Mechanics special, bad transmission & will need to be towed and im sure you will get a buyer.
Just keep in mind what a running 2004 Passat with 150K sells for and subtract a transmission cost form that price to get a idea of what you can actually get. If the car is as good as you claim, you should pay $2k to get the transmission fixed and drive the car another 3-5 years IF you actually liked the car. Beats $20-30K for another Passat.
Better yet, just type in mechanics special on Craigslist, ebay and autotrader and you will get an idea of what the going prices are

500 dollars isn't bad for a car with a gone transmission. Try craigslist, for about 2 weeks. Say that the transmission clutch is damaged and all you want is 600 dollars for it.
500 dollars is good, as most junk yards (from my experience) don't offer over 300 dollars for a car that doesn't drive.
Alot of good suggestions on this thread, but nobody is going to give you 1000 dollars for a car that doesn't drive.
Have it fixed and drive it for another "ten years". No car payments for another 10 years. Alternatively, find out how much it is worth with the transmission repaired, then sell it if you'll come out ahead.
Maybe the transmission clutch needs replacement and not the whole transmission. If you only consulted one mechanic, definitely consult another.
