I wouldn't recommend rushing into another Passat, not given the issues that they have as they age. Perhaps something like an Accord Sport might be a better option to consider? The CC is the same, average to below average reliability, depending upon the year. If you are set on a VAG automobile, look at a newer Audi A6 as the reliability is actually quite good, on par with a Mercedes E-Class. If you want something larger, but more of a cruiser, look at a Hyundai Genesis.

I wanted to avoid an Asian made vehicle despite all the obvious/known benefits - perhaps an irrational decision but I wanted to stick with either an American or German vehicle. Buick was my second choice after volkswagen. Not a fan of BMW and cannot afford a Mercedes right now

I suggest looking at an 2008 or later Chevy Impala they look just like the newer Passats and offer a lot ass-aches in the long term. There's no reason to ever buy a VW product.
