The body panels should fall off before the engine or trans fails. Provided they have been maintained.

Default Great point timing chain will last the engines lifetime compared to a timing belt.

Great point timing chain will last the engines lifetime compared to a timing belt. Timing belts are have a low mileage guaranteed failure point that comes at high cost. Make sure the new car you select has a timing chain rather then a timing belt. Also as you say water pump and alternator are a preventive maintenance item at 150k plus.

I have gone to 200k on two previous cars that I have bought new on the items mentioned. My third car of the same model I actually was a bit more conservative and changed water pump, alternator brushes, thermostat, and starter all between 150k and 200k. None of these items I mentioned have failed, all of them have been changed as preventive maintenance.

The accessory drive belts were done at 100k and 200k as recommended in the service manual. My thought is that some manufactures are much more conservative then others when it comes to service intervals and it is very directly related to car longevity and resale value.

Just got back from a 4000 mile road trip with a car that is pushing 240,000 miles and I'm trying to push the envelope to 300,000. So far so good ever the original clutch is cooperating in this experiment.

Yes, at a minimum. I'd say 300k before a engine or tranny rebuild is necessary.

For most cars that are reasonably well taken care of I would expect no less than 200k.

200,000 out of engine and transmission. There is no reason not to get that mileage out of a transmission and engine today.

The most important thing these days is to do your research and avoid buying a vehicle with a known design defect.

I'm interested in both past experience and future expectations of new car owners and car leasers as well.

At least 250,000 miles.

I'd say 200,000 out of the transmission and 300,000 out of the engine.
