Why do people have/leave dealer license plate frames on their vehicles? Were they offer a $500 discount by the dealer to do so for a set time to advertise the dealership?
People don't pay much attention, they think it is free protection for the plates and are also probably lazy.
Those are the reasons I have thought off.
I take it off the first day. I have a stash of them in my garage for prospective buyers if they are curious where I got the car from.
Better that than stickers/plaques on the car itself, which are illegal in many states.
I think people who leave the dealer frames on fall into the Venn intersection of (1) too lazy or mechanically inept to replace them; (2) too cheap to replace them; (3) mildly deluded into thinking they have to leave them on there for some duration or until the car is paid off; or - good one, Zen - the kind who purposely watch commercials... that is, just so damned proud of getting that fantastic deal that they want everyone to know what dealer they took to the cleaners.
I actually wish I had a specific one, though - the aluminum one that came with my Mustang in 1968. Small dealer, only in biz a few years, absorbed by another in town. Searched for years for a replacement and never found one.
I immediately take them off. I also remove the dealer decals which can be difficult sometimes, but I find letting it get good and hot in the sun helps to loosen the adhesive.
I think in most cases the owner takes his car back to the dealer to install them, then never thinks about the license plates again.
Seriously? There are people who can't manage a screwdriver to put plates on? And don't have a spouse/neighbor/kid/friend who can do it for them?
Maybe there are, but I don't think I've ever heard of someone going back to the dealer to have them mount the plates. OTOH, this does point out that some very large number of people put the dealer frames back on when they do get their plates, magnifying the issues above.
I take them off. I don't know the situation in every state but here in WA State new car is driven off the lot with temporary plate taped to the window and new ones are mailed and installed at the dealership within next 10 days or so. My last vehicle purchase I had replacements ready to go and let the dealer put them on since he was going to do it anyway.
I think this situation is like any other choice people make. It comes down to function or fashion. Some it doesn't matter to, others don't want to be caught dead with them.
I think most people just simply don't care. It's just a car to them.

Funny you mention that dollar figure. Went to pick up my Mazda and there was a dealer plate on it.
"You're going to remove that, right? Thanks"
"Oh, that? We put that on all the cars. It's no big deal"
"Ok, then drop $500 off the price of my car for advertising and..."
"We will get the off right now sir....."
