Not really supported by the article.

From the article you cited, the major innovation is reduction in drag.

Quote:
"We designed the Tesla truck to be like a bullet, whereas normal diesel trucks are designed more like a barn wall; this is a bullet," said the Tesla CEO. The Semi can generate the performance and the range due to the design. The drag coefficient or wind resistance of the regular diesel trucks is a .65 to .70. The Tesla Semi scores a 0.36,
The benefit is reduced drag, not electrification.

The other benefit - not currently available to consumers of regular EVs - is time to charge:

Quote:
Tesla wants the Semi to go from empty to 70 percent in 30 minutes. That time is vital to note because, in most jurisdictions, drivers must stop every six hours for a 30-minute break. The company says that the Semi will have added 400 miles in half an hour, which can last another six hours. Additionally, these chargers will be at destinations that would allow owners to charge the Semi while it is being loaded or unloaded.
There is a reason Tesla isn't putting this technology into passenger EVs.

It was part of the 2020 budget and allows both EV and natural gas semis to have the extra ton. In the EU, they are allowing an extra 4,400 lbs.

I believe it’s to make the semis viable.

Yes, like the federal tax incentives here to purchase EVs - they are trying to cut EVs a break in a number of areas to encourage their adoption and help to ensure commercial success.

To add to my previous comments, this article says that XPeng is losing $12k per vehicle sold, Nio is losing $19K per vehicle sold and Tesla is making $9600 per vehicle sold, this is why Tesla will be able to fight off Chinese companies, they have to lose money to compete with Tesla.

China has committed to being an EV and alternative energy manufacturing and technology leader. They currently dominate with 79% of global battery production and 75% of photovoltaic solar panels. They have spent the past decade securing critical mineral supplies and developing their supply chain. The US, once the technology leader, has sent much of our early technology knowledge to China in order to have these components produced since there has not been a national priority or support for developing and adopting EV and alternative energy technology here until recently. We now are looking to secure our own sources and develop domestic production but it is a difficult sell without financial support since domestic production of these products affects a competitive price of the end product (already higher than the replacement).

Ford is partnering with Chinese battery producer CATL to make the batteries for EVs in Michigan. GM is partnering with South Korea's LG to build batteries at 3rd plant in Michigan.

It won't be long before the Chinese, and others, will be selling cars in the US. China has used a partnering strategy in Europe and will likely partner with domestic manufacturers to sell their products here as well. Once here, it won't be long before these foreign companies branch out on their own and sell their products directly to US consumers under their own brand names.

That is true, but that data is for a single quarter, and I think you really need to know what's behind those numbers to understand how persistent those kinds of heavy quarterly losses at Nio and XPeng should be expected to be.

Well, Tesla has just done some more price-cutting, this time the Model S and Model X have their prices lowered in the USA.
https://www.ft.com/content/7802b9fe-...2-7b62e12a0102

This will of course cut into Tesla margins, but (a) their units sales should increase and (b) other EV makers may really be hurt if this becomes a full-blown price war. Tesla price cuts in China in 2022 are said to have hurt sales by Chinese automakers there. Big Auto can't manufacture EVs at the low costs that Tesla can.

"The shares have risen 80 per cent since the start of the year on hopes that Tesla will be able to take market share from rivals that are already struggling to make profits from electric vehicle sales."

That assumes that Tesla can increase production. CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla plans to build a Gigafactory in Monterrey, Mexico. That will be the EV maker's fifth car assembly plant. The new plant, combed with expansions at existing facilities, could raise manufacturing to about 3.5 million cars a year, Tesla said.

Honda built 3.87 million vehicles wordwide for the year 2022.
Nissan built 3.25 million vehicles wordwide for the year 2022.

I would caution folks that these are still early days for the Chinese EV makers introducing their products into Europe. But per "the Electric Viking", so far, it's not going so well...
