the gasoline versions of the smartcar dont get super mileage for the price you pay. you're better off getting a civic, and probably spending the same or less.
the diesel versions are much more efficient, but they do not pass emissions standards in the US. so you'll use less gas, but still pollute the air like mad.

yes, the Canadian version is slightly shorter so can legally fit crossways behind the cab of my friend's Volvo semi. His is diesel so better mileage, but not any better than my $35 VW Rabbit that hauls 5 people.
The Diesel does not have to pollute, you can run bio-d, and it is restricted in US because we have crappy fuel, especially compared to Europe who buys better stuff. Emission controls on European Diesels will be destroyed running our fuel. Even our new ULSD is not nearly as clean as Europe.
Even though the cage on the car doesn't collapse in a big crash, the weight difference between your smart and a big SUV means the force from the acceleration you'll experience (across the seatbelt) will break like every one of your ribs.
and yeah, not GREAT mileage PLUS premium fuel = no thanks
We saw them all over when we went to Italy in 2003 . It took a few years before we saw them here in the US. To me they just look like an enclosed golf cart. I would never have thought they would be safe enough to drive them on the freeway but I have seen them .
I never thought about them that way but you are so correct. LOL @ golf cart.
I do like the way they look and they would be fun to drive, especially the convertible model. They are alot roomier inside than you think. If you were driving in a small community or didnt have SUVs running 90mph around you I could see the usefulness.
I just cant get past that bug meet windshield concept.
These cars will be great for a new game called Smart Car Ping Pong. That's when you hit one and knock it into another vehicle. If you manage to send it into another vehicle, you get a point.
I've followed the progress of the car for several years and looked at it at dealers. I think it's WAY overpriced and underperforming and according to some it doesn't even get nearly as good mileage as one would expect.
At it's current price it's a novelty not a serious purchase. Now if it were cheaper, considerably cheaper, then it might be a serious product.
Dude, it's only 13,000 fully loaded! You can't get a golf cart that cheap.
But you can get a great late model used car that gets the same or better gas mileage for $13,000.
