So we were watching the Mecham auto auction and seeing some of the "clunkers" selling for $250,000. Wonder what Obama would pay those guys for their cars. LOL

It's more likely that the dealerships that lost their franchises will sell most of their vehicles via those dealerships that still are operating.

With Chrysler no longer building vehicles until/unless it emerges from bankruptcy, the "surviving" dealerships will still need vehicles to sell.

My guess is that the cancelled dealership lots will close and the vehicles owned by the cancelled dealers will be moved to more secure marshalling centers; the vehicles will be "redistributed/resold" to the remaining dealerships as need arises.

That is typical of a socialist like Obama. It's not a good idea, and I hope this stupid legislation doesn't go through. It may sound good now, but we will end up paying for it. I never trusted politicians when they tell you something that sounds too good to be true, especially one with a socialist agenda. Obama's idea is probably to create a demand for new cars to help the struggling auto industry. It won't help anybody because many consumers will only end up buying another used car or another clunker with what little money they give you for selling your clunker to the government.

If you have a clunker you want to get rid of, you'd be better off selling it to somebody else, parting it out or selling it to a junkyard.

Their is something truly un-american about this. The car is one of the greatest inventions in history. As Americans we made our unique mark with some great cars. Having the design turned over to the government
is a sure sign that that will never happen again and that the cost will
go up substantually. Don't let the aboves singular letter combinations take away from an important point he makes.
The government coaxing of pre Obama cars from the road. First the buy back(with your own money). Then a fee hike or carbon tax. A reformlation of gasoline that will shorten the life of older cars. Of course all this to the accompaniment of 'clunkers are killing the earth' smoking type propaganda campaign. Social change thru oppresive taxation is just wrong. This just proves again that despite what they say democrats care nothing about the poor. This will impact them most of all.
They can have my '49 Ford when they pry my cold ...................

There was a program like this in Texas but from what I understood it ran out of money quickly. It was bascailly a get old high emissions vehicles off the roadway program thru dealers of new cars.

The proposal is for the federal government to provide a payment for a vehicle traded-in on the purchase of a new vehicle. The qualifier is that the new vehicle needs to get significantly better gas mileage than the old vehicle being traded in.

There's several ideas behind this plan:
  • Replacing gas guzzlers with "gas-sippers" reduces demand for foreign oil.
  • New vehicles are cleaner emissions-wise, reducing pollution.
  • People spending money on big ticket items like automobiles will help to improve the economy.
There are also draw-backs:
  • It's spending money that the Federal Government doesn't have.
  • It's a form of socialism, or at least welfare.
  • Neither an improving economy nor an improving environment nor a lessening of American dependency on foreign oil are beneficial to the success of political conservatives in the next election cycle.

President John F. Kennedy made a timeless statement that could directly apply to this.
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. "

You've started this thread and have been periodically bumping it up for nearly a month now. If you could apply an equal measure of effort towards let's say, a job? A second job? You might actually be getting somewhere. It's this kind of attitude from a lot of Americans with a sense of entitlement and skewed logic that is partially to blame of driving the economy into the ground. Go to a junk yard, find a bumper cover on the cheap side, suck it up, and work like the most of us have been. Any vehicle regardless of condition so long as it's running and has all of its body panels is worth money if you feel it's absolutely imperative to get a newer car.
