I can't stand my Explorer having it on the passenger side. It took me a long time to get used to it. Of course by the time I did, I traded cars with DH and had to remember it was on the drivers side!
It took me forever before I finally realized 99% of cars have an arrow on the gas odometer...
I always wondered why it mattered. Here in Hong Kong, the pump line is long enough to reach the far side of the car and all gas stations are one way.
Us Americans like to keep things difficult, it's in our nature
I used to have a Ford and it was on the passenger side, my Honda is on the driver side and I like this much much better. It just makes more sense to me to not have to keep walking around the car.
Also***- Can someone on here PLEASE explain to me my left from my right? Sounds sad and desperate right? Serious here if someone says "my gas tank is on the left side of the car" what side would that be? In what way would you face the car? What if your IN the car? I never understood that so I think it's so much simpler and makes more sense to say "passenger side" or "driver side". I won't give in to this right left crap.

The wife's Escape is on the driver's side.
My Explorer is on the passenger side. I prefer the passenger side.
Same with us, Ferretkona; wife's Explorer is on the passenger's side. My '08 F150 is on the driver's side. You'd think Ford vehicles would be standard. (I like mine on the driver's side, FWIW)
Thanks to "gimme3steps" for reminding me about the '56 Chevy with it behind the taillight. I don't recall the exact years but some Caddies from that era had a "lift up" taillight similar to that.
And then there were the "original" VWs with the filler in the "trunk".
I've owned several BMW 2002s, it was on the passenger side with a plastic pipe running through the trunk into the tank. Once I was filling the tank and I sensed gas running out of the trunk! The pipe had split where it went through the trunk and left spilled a gallon or two in there. I drained, rinsed heavily and DISCONNECTED MY TAIL AND BRAKE LIGHTS before driving home. At least gas was only about $.40 per gallon back then.
A few possible reasons for passenger side fill: (all from Google)
1.A lot of gas stations used to be at the curbside (never have seen one)
2.The fuel filler door is on the passenger side as a safety feature. If you're out of gas on the highway and you have to refill the gas you won't be standing out in traffic. (makes sense)
3. The fuel filler is on the opposite side of the exhaust tip. (previously noted)
On a similar subject, has anyone had any experience with Ford's easy fill capless fuel filler?
