Okay i have a 97 240sx and window problems.
my passenger window works perfectly fine. When i click on the switch for drivers side it makes a ween ween noise but doesnt move.
When I was getting my car painted, the owner told me after the job was done that he looked into it for free and it was either the regulator or switch but probably regulator but NOT the motor.

Knowing that I got a used regulator off the same model car and went to a mobile window repair guy and when he took it off he said it was the motor and that my regulator was totally fine.

Now im stumbled. 2 shops saying contradictory things and Ive already spent like $100 trying to figure out the real problem.

I am considering tomorrow to take it to a shop and PAY AGAIN for just DIAGNOSE and then REPAIR and prob PART which is going to cost me a lot of money.

The motor makes a noise for sure..its not dead as it respons to when i click on switch, but the window just doesnt go up or down =[

Help please

Yo. why not take the panel off of the RIGHT side door and see what is working on that side thats ISNT working on the driver side. Then you will know where the problem is before you spend another dime. If you need a motor get one at a salvage yard thats been tested before you buy it. As safety note always disconnect the battery before you put your hands into any electric door.

Learn to do your own diagnosis and repair or remain at the mercy of BS artists till you do. Harsh, but true. Chief is right on about disconnecting the battery before you put your fingers in there, listen to him or you can end up with some very painful and even disfiguring hand injuries.

To test the switch, all you need is a test light.

You can assemble a decent kit of tools that will fit in a regular lunchbox, it won't enable you to fix *everything* and it won't include many if any special tools that make some repairs a lot easier, but it will get you by while you are still in school

Been there, done that - no experience so DIY is tough, no extra $ so paying a shop means you eat Ramen noodles for a while.

Eventually you will finish your degree, get a real job, and can build and stock a real garage, if you are still a car guy then.

Thank you M3 . I agree too that the ripp off experts are out there. I think that now that new car sales are down it shows people are having to have their older cars fixed. A bad new car market means a good repair shop market and there are lots of more potential suckers for the crooks to con. You almost have to understand what you are paying any mechanic to do before you give him a free hand to tell you anything he wants to..Anyone that wants to maintain his older car should get a service repair manual and read it. This will help him identify the BS artist when he needs work done.
