My wife has a 2005 Cavalier with a problem in the dash cluster, maybe someone here has had a problem of this sort before and figured it out.
The speedometer stops working first and then all the other dash gauges stop working. I can take the fuse out that goes to the dash cluster and leave it out for a couple minutes put it back in and everything works as it should, works fine sometimes for maybe 2-3 hours and sometimes for a week or so and does it all over again.
Had the fuse panel out to see if I could find something causing a short in there but found nothing. Had it to the dealer and they couldn't find the problem either because it's not throwing any codes. I thought about changing the speed sensor to see if maybe that was the problem but the dealer said they didn't think that was the problem. When the cluster acts up it doesn't blow any fuses or throw a code to the problem, I'm stumped on this one. Anyone have any ideas? Replacing the dash cluster is over $500.
Not at all sure what the problem is or if it's in the cluster - but if it *is* in the cluster, probably a cluster from a junkyard is as good as a new one.
It's possible that the cluster has to be "initialized" to the car and that may be something that takes equipment that generally only dealers have -

I had a friend of a friend who had a 2004 Cavalier that did the exact same thing. He was poor, so he did not have the money to fix it. He learned to just live with it unfortunately. The problem is you could fix it, and then have it happen again since it seems to be a common occurrence.
It is not because it is a Chevy, it is because this particular Chevy has a faulty design on the instrument cluster. My friend has owned multiple Chevy trucks, and they have all been very reliable and trouble free. I hope you see what I am getting at.

I know what you mean man. I hear these positive GM stories, but unfortunately only online. Myself, never an ounce of luck with GM.
