I hate it when i have to explain tongue-in-cheek comments...

In any case, I do recall several accidents involving banner-tows. Don't know what the stats are, but here's something interesting I found: Information for Banner Tow Operators:

On vacation at the beach a few years ago, I watched them going by all day long, and it occurred to me that it's probably a great job for building hours...

I think Chava meant that many pilots build their hours instructing, but agreed that as I pointed out, banner towing would be good for that as well.

I've had a few friends who towed banners, seemed to be a similar life to flying skydivers or (jumpers)...Old cheap airplanes with really sketchy maintenance histories that are often questionably legal to fly.

One of my banner towing friends can tell numerous "Dang...engine failed...again" stories. I don't think he had the privilege of landing on a beach ever, but had some scenarios that were pretty close. I also had a lot of friends who towed gliders during college, I never earned my tail wheel endorsement or i'd have done the same as an instructor...got to fly the Super Cub a couple times though, great fun!

Like I said...

Banner towing Piper PA-18 "Super Cub" loses power, lands on Palos Verdes, CA beach, plane flips, pilot walks away with minor injuries...
