I was fairly lucky.

We didn't sit together, but I secured a middle seat in the exit row(plenty of legroom) and my wife got an aisle seat in the back(she's small).

But on our return flight, I think we should probably give up sitting together in the first place, so she can get a middle seat in the front and I can try to see if I can get an exit row seat.
