Where are the 'good' public schools in the Baltimore area? Do any districts have magnet school or gifted program options? I prefer as close to DC as possible that wouldn't be a horrible commute to Woodlawn in a solidly middle class area. How about the Catholic parish schools? Are some better than others? This type of question must have been asked here often, so thanks in advance for replying!

Catonsville High School gets a good reputation, and the Catonsville Elementary and Middle Schools have decent ratings. Also check out Hillcrest and Westowne Elementary schools. You can spend up to $600,000 for a house in parts of Catonsvile, especially near UMBC, so you can call them middle-class areas.

Regarding Catholic schools, when I lived near Woodlawn, some of my neighbors sent their kids to St. Agnes. For high school, Mount DeSales gets a good review, but it is all girls, I believe. John Paul Regional Catholic School has a new building, so I don't know much about it.

I heard good things about a Catholic school in Catonsville called St. Mark's. If you move to Catonsville, stick to the part that is zoned for the Catonsville as opposed to Woodlawn schools. People I know who live in Catonsville really like it.

Sure, there are excellent public schools in Ellicott City. When you said the "Baltimore area", I though you were restricting yourself to Baltimore County.

Ellicott City is an easy drive to Woodlawn.

Just about anywhere in Howard Co. Central and Southern Anne Arundel County. Northern Baltimore Co. As well as, school districts in the more populated regions of Carroll Co. as well.

Just FYI the Baltimore area is not just Baltimore City and County.

OK, I am to more literal-minded than the OP about the "Baltimore area".

However, since the criterion was "as close to DC as possible" but "not a horrible commute to Woodlawn", then the OP could look at Montgomery County as well. I used to commute 34 miles from Silver Spring to Woodlawn, and it's an easy reverse commute.

However, I'd suggest that the best fit is probably Ellicott City, perhaps the Centennial HS district.
