Looks a lot like Dempster will be starting for the Dodgers on Sunday (in a game I'll be at because I wanted to watch Nate Eovaldi pitch).
Not in favor of this trade (to state it mildly). Dempster isn't as good as his 2 ERA suggests. LA isn't as good as their record suggests. Colletti is terrible at making deadline deals. Colletti isn't as good a GM as Theo or Hoyer.
RT @JimBowdenESPNxm: Cubs ...continue trade discussions with Dodgers on deal that would send Matt Garza for package including Zach Lee
Everything I said about the Dempster trade goes double for Garza.
Garza is a better pitcher, but Lee is far and away LA's #1 prospect.
Not to mention, that Garza is signed for next year, but LA is already too deep in starters for 2013. Kershaw, Billingsley, Lilly, Capuano, and Harang are all signed, plus Nate Eovaldi is major league ready and Rubby de la Rosa should be back from his surgery.
Delgado confirmed in Demptser deal. People seem to be very happy about that (cubs fans, that is)
Dempster is projected, by ZiPS for this the rest of the season:
11 starts, 71 innings, 3.97 runs per 9. That's 31 runs
Delgado is projected for:
12 starts, 63 innings, 4.45 runs per 9. That's 31 runs
Give a replacement level pitcher 8 innings to make up for the difference in innings, and Delgado + that pitcher will give up about 36 runs.
Acquiring Dempster should save the Braves about 5 runs.
Add in the differences in the costs, plus the fact that Delgado will remain on the team for another 5 seasons and I see why Braves fans wouldn't be happy about this deal.
Dempster has 10/5 rights (10 years in the major leagues and 5 years with the same team). That means he has to approve any trade. He, apparently, has not approved this trade.
Ken Rosenthal says that the Dodgers are his first choice, and Atlanta his second.
Wow. I guess he attempts to replace Brett Gardner.
Looks like the Mariners are also giving the Yankees $ to cover Ichiro's salary. Apparently the Yankees will pay $2.25 million of Ichiro's remaining salary
Also the Tigers aquire Omar Infante and Anibal Sanchez. Definitely filling needs they had. Haven't looked into exactly what they give up.
The Tigers have been running Ramon Santiago and Ryan Rayburn out at 2B most of the season. Tigers 2Bmen have combined to hit .286/.276 (OBP and SLG) which is about 40% worse than the average major league hitter. Infante figures to hit about league average for the rest of the season. Huge improvement. Neither Santiago nor Raburn is anything special with the glove. Infante generally rates as above average. Huge improvement.

DJ Mitchell and Danny Farquhar go to Seattle.
Mitchell's a 25 year old right-handed starter who doesn't strike out that many or possess especially brilliant control. He gets a decent amount of groundballs, but his ceiling looks like a fringe major league starter or low-leverage reliever.
Farquhar, also 25, is a minor league reliever who's played for 3 organizations this season and DFA'd as many times than he's appeared in the majors.
Ichiro was certainly declining, but it's hard to imagine that this is the best deal the Mariners could make. And why deal him at all? They get no talent in return. They save relative peanuts in salary and I can't imagine that the fans will react well.
"Several weeks ago, Ichiro Suzuki, through his long time agent, Tony Attanasio, approached Chuck Armstrong and me to ask that the Mariners consider trading him. Ichiro knows that the club is building for the future, and he felt that what was best for the team was to be traded to another club and give our younger players an opportunity to develop."
Ok then. That clears that up. I still would think some team could have offered more.
