I'm admittedly a fair weather baseball fan, but I know a little about MLB because I'm in general a pretty big sports fan.
I was looking at the As and Orioles rosters today and I don't see a single person that I would consider a star or rising star.
Has a team (lets say in the Wild Card era) ever won a World Series with such little star power. The As seem to thrive on their bullpen and the Orioles seem to get by with homerun power and ... something.
When was the last team that won with no notable stars?
The 2003 Marlins, but they had Pudge and a young Cabrera... Beckett too.
The 97 Marlins had Kevin Brown and Leiter and Sheffield.
Add Josh Reddick...32HR at age 25 constitutes "rising star" status.
Not sure that I'm sold on Reddick
He's a good player, but I think that he falls a bit short of star.
His season this year, wasn't all that different from his season last year.
2011: .327 OBP/.457 SLG = 4% better than the league average hitter
2012: .304 OBP/.463 SLG = 9% better than the league average hitter
How about the 1940 Cincinnati Reds? The only famous guy on the roster was catcher Ernie Lombardi, and he made it to the Hall of Fame, except he was one of those players elected by the Veterans Committee a hundred years after he died or something.
