He had over 2000 hits, a batting average of 308, a slg% of over 560, almost 500 homeruns, and almost 2000 rbi's. You may want to rethink that statement.

What's to rethink? He conceded that Piazza was a fine at the plate. The question was raised about his abilities behind it.

And just to nitpick, since you seem so intent on being nothing less than argumentative, where are you getting first 1500, then "almost 2000" RBI in his career from? According to Baseball-Reference.com, he had 1335 RBI. Add another 20 for post season and all star appearances. I know it's still 1355 more than I have, but my advice to you is to have your facts straight before posting a comment. Furthermore, calling 427 HR "almost 500" is also quite the reach, don't you think?

Clearly one of the worst behind the plate is a stretch, he struggled throwing out base stealers but he worked very hard and actually was an above average receiver.

Interesting article, relating to Piazza's defensive liabilities:
BaseballEvolution.com - Ranking Piazza Among the All-Time Greats - Part 1

I don't think his ranking as the best offensive catcher is really debatable. The question is, how will his shortcomings behind the plate (especially his inability to throw out runners) tarnish his legacy standing next to it when judging his overall ranking as a catcher.

From Baseball Prospectus:
Quote:
The bottom line is that Piazza is more than Hallworthy despite his defense (which was merely lousy until 2002, when he took things to a whole new level of stink) and his bad taste in hairstyles. His home run totals, 12 All-Star appearances and four top five finishes in the MVP voting suggest he’ll be fine when the BBWAA voters have their say.
I think that pretty much sums up the qualification aspect of the thread. I believe the main discussion was "What cap?" however.

yea, he is one of the worst defensive catchers. The best all-around catcher of all-time IMO is Johnny Bench, was good offensively and defensively, can throw Pudge in that hat as well

True, but too bad I never got to see Johnny Bench in person.

Yes, Ivan Rodriguez is great behind the plate. Not only does he throw out a lot of runners, he intimidates a lot of base stealers to the point where many don't even attempt to run on him.

BTW, can he have 2 nicknames? "Pudge" is what everyone calls him, but I say we start calling him "I-Rod". Yes, that's probably a cross between Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez and a Chevrolet "IRoc" Camaro.

LOL, pudge already has that nickname, good idea though. Ivan Rodriguez was so good at throwing runners out, I think once he threw out someone when he was on his knees, that's impressive!!!, And when played for the Rangers the heat and humidity, didn't seem to affect him, he was the offensive catcher in the AL when he played for the Rangers especially in 2000, het hit 27 HR and 83 RBI in only 91 games, slugged .667

I never saw Johnny Bench either(I'm 15 years old), but he averaged 29 HR and 103 RBI a year and had 4 season with 30+ HR and 2 seasons with 40+ HR, and in 1970 had 45 HR and 148 RBI
