Madison Bumgarner is on the DL after a dirt bike accident during an off-day in Denver.

Here's a guy with a mega-million-dollar throwing arm and he's out playing macho man on a day off...OMG.

Excerpt: "Already off to a rough start, the San Francisco Giants suffered another blow with Madison Bumgarner’s self-inflicted injury to his throwing shoulder. The team’s ace hurt himself in a dirt bike accident on Thursday, the club announced Friday, and he was placed on the 10-day disabled list.....Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported that the left-hander “will be out six to eight weeks.”"

This season has the stench of being a real bummer. The team is down to Cueto in terms of reliable starters. They have a four headed platoon in left and none of them have been hitting. There is no depth on the bench....Giants pinch hitters so far have been 2 for 21 with 13 strikeouts. Leadoff hitters have posted a collective .260 OBA. The cleanup spot has a collective .367 slugging average.

None of that is encouraging.

Regression to the mean should mean there's a pretty good chance of nowhere to go but up.

That makes no sense.

Last year they won 87 games. The mean is 81 wins, so the team cannot possibly "regress" to 81 wins while simultaneously going up.

That...and your other comments elsewhere, lead me to conclude that you do not actually understand the concepts of formal statistics.

Maybe I've been giving you too much credit.
This team is not last year's team and this team is not the league average. They have a .353 winning percentage so, yes, regression to a .500 record would be an improvement.

But, what I meant was.

Quote:
The team is down to Cueto in terms of reliable starters.
Samardjiza has a 6.16 ERA, but a 4.14 FIP and 2.56 xFIP.
Regression to the mean (his mean as defined by his actual talent level) means less runs should be expected to score on his watch.

Quote:

Giants left fielders are hitting .136/.212/.220. They aren't that bad. Regression to the mean will mean improvement by the left fielders.

Quote:

Again, their pinch hitters aren't THAT bad. Regression to the mean will mean improvement.

Quote:
Leadoff hitters have posted a collective .260 OBA.
The primary leadoff hitter, I believe, is Denard Span. Again, he's not this bad, regression will mean an improvement.

Quote:
The cleanup spot has a collective .367 slugging average.
This includes a healthy dose of Brandon Crawford, Nick Hundley and Aaron Hill who have combined for a .199 SLG. None of them are that bad. Again, regression, would mean an improvement.

This is a better team than they've been so far. Regression to their mean will mean an improvement.

CBeisbol

The purpose of an offense is not hitting home runs, it is not compiling a high batting average or stealing the most bases. The purpose of an offense is to score runs. The purpose of a defense is not striking out batters or making spectacular plays, the purpose is preventing runs from scoring. These two primary elements define all wins and losses.

When we speak of a team regressing or progressing in relation to the mean, we then are of course talking about their won loss record. We are not talking about individual performers approaching or moving away from some individual performance mean as you suggest above.

The reason we aren't referencing individual performances is because the mean has not been specifically identified. Are you speaking of the mean for someone's entire career? The mean for all players at his position so far this season? Or the mean for them from last season...or the last five seasons?

So, if you do wish to reference individual performance, it needs to be identified at the time, and the mean which is being referenced explained. All of that was missing when you first posted.

And team performance is largely predicated on the performance of the individual members of the team.

You'd just posted how the performance of some individual players had led to poor team performance. I simply said that the players should regress to their mean and that should improve the team's fortunes.

Then I was already thinking ahead to a conversation on people who'd point out "The Giants were a .350 team with Bumgarner but a .500 team after his injury".

Anyway, the Giants have lost Bumgarner for a while, and they're probably going to begin play better.

It didn't begin today, the Rockies completed a sweep with an 8-0 pounding this afternoon in Denver.

It has been a black day for the Bay Area teams. As I'm typing it is the bottom of the ninth in Oakland , two outs, no one on, and Seattle leading 11-1.

Oop...Yonder Alonso came through in the clutch with a two out double.

Oh....the rally fell short. 11-1 final.

Reminds me....the A's have now copied the Giants in having a female sideline reporter. Yonder Alonso had been the hero of the game a few nights ago and throughout her post game interview she kept calling him "Alonso" apparently thinking it his first name.

Giants make some moves

LF piece Aaron Hill was placed on the DL
LF piece Chris Marrero was DFA'd

One of the Giants' top prospects, Christian Arroyo, was called up to be a left field piece.
The also called up veteran John Jay.

John Jay! Yah, I think he's going to solve the Giants problems!
