Just heard that the Padres hired former Cardinals manager (last in 2021) Mike Shildt to be their new manager.

The Cardinals upgraded starting pitching with the return of Lance Lynn and the addition of Kyle Gibson. Lynn and Gibson are not ace pitchers. They provide a veteran presence in the starting rotation.

I really like these two players. Gorman and Donovan.

They're ready to get back in it. If they ever heal up completely, these guys are going to make a big difference.

Default 2024: 0-0

Best case scenario: The team has an influx of veterans (Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn & Kyle Gibson) to supplement the youngsters (Mason Wynn, Victor Scott, Dylan Carlson, Jordan Walker) and the organization won’t stay down for long. The division looks to be back in play, the Brewers basically blew up their team, and are we so sure the Reds should be a division favorite??

Worst case scenario: I know John Mozeliak just extended manager Oliver Marmol, but that’s a dark cloud hanging over the team. They have cornerstone franchise icons Yadi Molina, Albert Pujols, and Adam Wainright waiting in the wings who the fans will call for especially if the Cards get off to a slow start again. Also, they are going to have to figure out what to do with Jordan Walker. He definitely needs to play, and almost every day, but he shouldn’t be playing the OF. I still think the team should end up trading Goldy and move Walker to first where he should be, but you also don’t want to trade a player in Goldy who was basically a top 3 MVP vote getter as recently as 2022.

Prediction: After Mo added his 3 starters in basically mid November he sat out the rest of the off season. Lynn, Gray, and Gibson aren’t going move the needle much especially considering what Jordan Montgomery went for. They’ll have a better season than last year but still miss the playoffs for a second straight year as the Marmol hot seat really amps up. 78-84 and 3rd place in the division. 4 game series at Chavez Ravine begins on Thursday: Miles Mikolas (9-13, 4.78 in ’22) starts for the Cardinals opposed by Tyler Glasnow (10-7, 3.53) who makes his Dodgers debut after an offseason trade with the Rays. First pitch slated for 4:10.

Default 0-1

Cards 1 @ Dodgers 7.
Miles Mikolas walked Mookie Betts to lead off the game, Shohei Ohtani followed with a double moving Betts to 3rd but Ohtani got thrown out at 3rd?? I’ll have to watch the highlight of this. Freddie Freeman followed with a RBI single, Will Smith singled moving Freeman to 3rd, and Max Muncy had a sac fly to make it 2-0. Betts homered leading off the 3rd, and following a walk to Ohtani Freeman followed with a home run of his own to basically put the game out of reach at 5-0 before the Cards would get their lone run on a Paul Goldschmidt home run leading off the 4th. Victor Scott the second reached on a 1 out error in the 5th stole second, but Mason Wynn flied out and Brendan Donovan fouled out to end the inning. Teoscar Hernandez had a 1 out double in the 6th, scored on a James Outman single, Outman moved to second on a Jason Heyward ground out before Gavin Lux ended the inning with a ground out. Betts walked to lead off the 7th, 2 batters later Freeman walked, Betts advanced to 3rd on a Smith fly out, scored on a Muncy single for the final runs before Hernandez ended the inning with a strikeout. Goldy was 3-4, the rest of the lineup was 0-27 and only reached base twice: a walk to Wilson Contreras and the aforementioned error when Scott was batting. Not gonna win you many games. Mikolas (0-1) allowed 5 runs on 7 hits (2 home runs) with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts in 4.1. Tyler Glasnow (1-0) allowed 1 run on 2 hits (1 home run) with a walk and 5 strikeouts in 6 innings and Ryan Yarbrough (1st save) had 1 hit allowed and 1 strikeout in 3 scoreless innings.

Game 2 of the series is on Friday night. Bobby Miller (11-4, 3.76) starts for the Dodgers while the Cards give the ball to Zack Thompson (5-7, 4.48) with first pitch scheduled for 10:10. In other divisional action from Thursday the Pirates came from behind to beat the Marlins, the Cubs lost to the Rangers in extras, and the Reds beat the Nats 8-2. Reds & Pirates lead the division at 1-0, Brewers are a half game back at 0-0, and the Cubs and Cardinals are tied for last at 0-1 and 1 back.

Default 3-4

A 7 game road trip through LA & SD. That's about as good as it could probably be. They probably should've split with the Dodgers, and had ample opportunity to win the final game in San Diego, but 3-4 is deserved. They'll now head home for 6 games against the NL East: Starts with 3 on Thursday against the 0-7 Marlins, and than the Phillies come in on Monday.

Time for St Louis to get things going. This is the team I'm rooting for in the NL Central. It's time.

Ivan Herrera. Just remember that name.

Clobbered a homer in the Cardinals' home opener yesterday. Hopefully, he gets to stick.

Default 6-7

3-3 week. Just a terrible final game series loss to the Marlins, and the Phillies series didn't go exactly well either. Maybe if Oli brings in Zack Thompson instead of Pallente to start the inning the series goes a different way, but we can do this for pretty much every series. Noot is back for the series in Arizona which is good because no one on this team is really hitting that much, so maybe having that spark at the top of the lineup gets them going.

6 game road trip to Arizona and Oakland starts on Friday in Phoenix. Realistically, you should expect to win the series in Oakland (even though they've won 4 of their last 5 and aren't even the worst team in their own division yet alone baseball); Arizona will be tougher they haven't been playing that great, but I think you take a trip that ends 3-3.
