We are moving there (hubby is already there during the week), would like to find an authenticMexican restaurant that has Margarita specials, prefer family owned as opposed to a chain

Thanks

La Careta is yummy, I love the queso dip!! The margaritas are good too and have lots of kick. Superior cafe is right down the street and it is a lot of fun, but I personally find it crowded all the time.

No true Mexican restaurants in BR. They're all Tex-Mex. Of the group Superior Grill, Ninfa's, and La Carreta are probably the best.

La Carreta is definitely a great restaurant. Great margaritas too.
Superior Grill is usually crowded, but not always. Very good food, good happy hour specials, good drinks, good atmosphere.
I like Las Palmas a lot too. They have locations throughout the metro area.
Probably the best close to authentic as you can get mexican is El Rancho on Florida Blvd east of Airline. And they have very good margaritas. You'll hear more spanish when you order there than in most of the other major restaurants in town. I imagine, but an not sure, that this place is locally owned.

I actually enjoy On the Border. I know--not especially authentic and a chain, but as far as Mexican restaurants in Baton Rouge go, that's the one I like the most. Ninfa's also. Nothing really seems too authentic, as others have already pointed out. I've never been to El Rancho, though, so I can't say anything about that one.

There are some other good ones in addition to those already mentioned (which are pretty good):

La Reyna (Central American cuisine - Perkins past Siegen)
Serranos (Central/South American cuisine - Highland at North Gates)
Mi Padres (Tex Mex but still good- Perkins at Bluebonnet)

Now, I'll admit my bias: I think Las Palmas is "Wal-Mart" Mexican food.

And don't forget that Superior's margaritas used to have Everclear (or something very close to it) in them. Powerful stuff.

Thanks, I'll be in BR all next week house hunting and will go look up one of those.
Last time I was there I had lunch at Las Palmas and was not impressed.

I will be staying on BlueBonnet by the interstate, have a GPS and will explore!

Alright, alright, I get the deal with Las Palmas. lol.

I've never had a problem with their food. Their service is a little mediocre though.
