I'm planning on relocating to Baton Rouge to attend LSU as a graduate student. I'm a single 23-year-old woman and was hoping to get involved in the community if possible.

My interests include plants/gardening especially any botanical garden volunteering or local cacti/succulent/houseplant clubs, vegetarian groups/outreach, art (the creation of, although I wouldn't mind some light volunteering for a gallery/museum either), volunteering for animal shelters, etc. Any other suggestions even if they don't fall into these categories would be appreciated. (But not interested at all in sports.)

I imagine I'll get housing around LSU and don't know if I'll need a car (will I?), but even if I do I'd prefer something close to save on commuting.

Thanks!

There are plenty of groups for you to get involved in . BATON ROUGE GREEN comes to mind . They do a lot of botanical work in public areas . There are volunteer groups for local museums as well .
GOOGLE should turn up a list of ideas . And yes , you will need a vehicle . B.R. is pretty spread out .

If the only places you really want to go are around LSU, there is a good (free!) bus line, but it only runs until 6:00, and then there are two night buses, but I'm unsure of the exact routes. Otherwise, yes, you will need transportation.

Check out CAAWS for animal shelter volunteer opportunities. I believe there is an application that you can fill out online and you even get to choose if you'd prefer working with the cats or the dogs.
