Any public transportation from Kona to Hilo? I'm sure it would be a mighty expensive taxi ride!

There is a public bus system that runs between both towns; you'll have to do more research for particulars:

Hawai'i County Mass Transit Agency — Hele-On Bus

It is a long ride and no, it does not go to either airport.

The Hele-On bus is about the only public transportation we have. It started out very meager and difficult to use but it's improving a lot. Give it another couple of years and it will probably be quite a nice bus system. At least the price is right!

Well, if you take a bicycle along with you, it's a dollar. Otherwise it's free.

I suspect after they get it so a lot of folks are able to use it, the bus will start charging some sort of fee but it's still in it's beginning stages so it doesn't go everywhere yet.
