Sears Roebuck or Spiegel, I think. It's been over 60 years ago. Of course, studies show that 83% of the things you read on the internet are made up....

Mahalo!

Little dose of reality, about WHY people stock up when they see a big storm coming ... i just saw this on the Civil Defense alert site... 2nd time in a matter of weeks... and the alternate route they suggest is around the other side of the island...

The Hawaii Police Department reports that Highway 11 between the 57 and 58 mile marks between Pahala and Naalehu is closed to all traffic due to flooding. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to use alternate routes if possible.

Living very near that section of highway, I totally understand WHY people stock up. That's why we went to Costco last week. What I don't understand is why they stock up with toilet paper. Like I said before, almost every cart at Costco had bottled water and toilet paper. Yes, people were also buying other stuff that is needed in case of power outages (like wine and beer), but predominantly, without fail, they felt that toilet paper was one of those necessitates.

Maybe it's like Hoot and Annie said, we don't have the Wards and Sears catalogs anymore!

Isn't there a higher elevation road that runs from Pahala to Naalehu?

Yes. It's a long narrow drive but beautiful.

The Ka'ala'iki Road is the upper, old cane haul road, that runs between Na'alehu and Pahala. That road is also closed during high rains because there are areas there that can be washed out and at one point there is a deep gully.

I had several friends who drove over the Saddle Road to get home from Hilo. Added 5-6 hours to the trip, by the time you backtrack back to Hilo from Pahala.

In the event of a zombie apocalypse, Charmin will be a far more valuable trade good than gold would ever be. A couple months in, two rolls would probably get you a whole roast pig in exchange.
