I am a gay middle aged man looking at relocating to Birmingham. Can anyone suggest an are to live inexpensively and still be safe and not singled out because I am gay? Is there a "gay" area of town ? I like older homes and don't mind remodeling one. Thank you all

Well, there are a couple of areas in the city that you should look in to. The Southside areas(Highlands, Forest Park, Five Points South-by far the most diverse areas) would probably be the most gay friendly areas. Living in these neighborhood tend to be a little more pricey, but do your research. The clubs/bars are nearby, and everyone there are very open-minded. The east side neighborhoods(Crestwood, East Lake, Avondale) are also pretty good for homosexuals. East Lake is dubbed as Birmingham's "art" district. Homes in East Lake and Avondale may need a little TLC, however. Birmingham's gay scene is growing, but if you need more without too much, Atlanta is a weekend trip(only 2 hours away). I hope that helped a little.

Ditto what bhamguy said. East Lake is still a bit of a "frontier" safety-wise, but there are artistic folks trying to make a go of it there (a couple times a decade someone tries to "bring back" Eastlake). Don't live in any apartments or townhouses in East Lake - get a house. And I would recommend staying east of, say, 85th St.

Avondale/Avonwood and the northernmost parts of Crestwood North still have some bargains if you want a fixer.

Thanks Bhamguy and Jakabedy. I will take a look on the realtor site and see what I can find. I tend to like the edgy areas as I usually find the nicest people there. Dont mind a fixer upper either just finished mine here in Knoxville LOL I just may not bite off as much as I did here this time. Thank you for the info its much appreciated
