I would prefer a gated community, but do not want to live on a golf course. We love the view from Greystone crest, but I'd like other options, too. Thoughts?

What's your budget? There are some lovely views from smaller homes down 280 in/near Chelsea, but IMHO better views are available along the ridge in Highland Lakes (a gated community.) Presently, there are only a few listings, ranging from $865K to just under $1.1MM. There are probably a few others that a real estate agent who knows the area well could show you (not current listings, but available at the right price.)

Plenty of options but the operative issue is in what part of town will you work? You won't get to enjoy those great views if you're slogging up and down 280 at rush hour every day.

If you could swing it, I'd say either Shades Crest Road that runs through Vestavia and Bluff Park or, if you're really broken out with cash, Southside along Cliff Road, Redmont Road, and Altamont Road. However, none of these are gated communities.

If you're without kids, I would be tempted to recommend the highrise condos on Red Mountain and Southside. Lots of those are pretty sweet and have security.

These are good options, too. I'm just not a North Shelby kind of guy.

Thank you for your responses.

I have a budget of around $2.5M. I am a stay at home mom of 5, and I will be homeschooling, so I will be enjoying the view as much as possible.

DH will also be working from home 2/5 days per week, so 280 won't be the worst thing that ever happened to us.

Anyone familiar with Greystone Crest vs Highland Lakes? Anything good or bad I need to know?
