I am new to Birmingham and would be looking to find where the grand performance theatres are located and would like to find where the best venues are to hear live music in Birmingham. In addition if there are any calendars of upcoming shows, and perhaps even anything as far as Atlanta (which I think may have a slight edge on cultural events)

Thanks a lot

Tourian has a great start to his list, but I'd add the Alys Stephens Center. They have a great list of performers every year: Home - Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center

I would add to that list, the Samford University programs , Alabama School of Fine Arts and Red Mountain Theatre, as well as the Virginia Samford Theatre.

It is actually hard to keep up with all that goes on.

Pick up a free BLACK AND WHITE rag at many business and of course google the names given to you on this thread.

Good luck, I miss a lot because I forget to check.

Black and White went under. Weld is a good place, however.

Poor Chuck. We're friends of the family. It was so sad to witness.

I realized a few months ago that it wasn't beinb published anymore. Used to find them all over. Went to their website to realize the owner had passed. I used to really like picking up a copy and seeing what was going on when we were down there.

Just curious, are there any other local publications like it? Something on the lines of Valley Planet here?

I do not know what Valley Planet is (like), but cpg just mentioned Weld and there is also Birmingham The Magazine.

Sound and Page is a really cool new music venue and reading room in Woodlawn.

Also, The Red Cat Coffee House at Pepper Place has some really cool folk/indie artists who come through sometimes.

(You won't find those two in Weld most of the time.)

Also check out Moonlight on the Mountain. I don't go out there often because it's a little way from downtown but that's a really cool spot.
