Thanks for posting your updates. What's even more amazing than the growth downtown is how this redevelopment is only beginning to scratch the surface. There is extraordinary room to grow in what is a fantastic downtown grid.

Thanks for the updates!

The next big UAB project ($78.5M Science & Engineering academic building) is scheduled to get underway in November. Will begin with the demolition of the old School of Education Building.

Also, in a recent Rotary Club meeting, Finis St John said $50M in state funding had been secured to move forward with the $75M Genomics and Data Sciences research center at UAB. It will be a complete gut/renovation of the Harrison-Lyons building on 19th St S and also involve building a small addition on the side along with a new public plaza area. Should pay big dividends for Birmingham.

OK, Brown-Marx... you're officially on the clock. Literally every one of your peers in the city has grown up and moved on haha... it's time.

Someone is dinking with it, chiefly to stabilize the structure. But then they're going to wait and see, so it will be empty for a while. I'm guessing they're waiting to see where demand grows, whether in office, hospitality, or residential.

It's an enormous building.

With so many buildings in Birmingham being old as they are, a lot of them are available for tax credit. When developers purchase them, they look for ways to offset cost a tab bit. Applying for historic tax credit is one way. That process I assume isn't a short one. So these developers make announcement about buying properties, but rarely get started quickly on them because they are waiting on approval. Just imagine how many developers applies for this. I would bet that they are waiting on that approval or something specific like that.

Brown Marx is owned by the same developers of the Elyton and Fairfield Inn & Suites hotels. They proposed demolished the small deck and building a 9 story deck at the corner of 1st Ave N and 19th St to serve "existing and new" hotel projects, but it on hold during the pandemic. My guess is they're planning a hotel for Brown-Marx.

Glad to see the former AT&T building moving forward. That's a super ambitious project and I hope they can pull it off as it would be a major shot in the arm for downtown, but especially the central business district. It has the advantage of being located near a lot of major employers, but it's pretty dead over there at night. Maybe successfully converting this building (along with CityWalk) can start to change that.

Also, that rooftop space is sick. Those pictures make it look like a full scale restaurant rather than just a resident patio.
