Yeah I think the full potential of the project could be similar to Ponce City Market, but I'm just not sure that size project could be supported yet.

The Birmingham-sized version of Ponce City Market kinda already exists in the form of Pepper Place

A lil' business news toward the end of that article...

"Thursday’s meeting will include a public hearing and potential adoption of a resolution regarding a project development agreement with Fetch Rewards Inc.

“This is a software company that’s based out of Madison, Wisconsin,” Commissioner Steve Ammons said. “They’re planting 200 jobs here with an average wage of $80,000 a year. We’ll do our regular tier job incentive based on the level of wage that we get a return. We do it for three years and we’re capping it at $300,000.”

The business is expected to be on Second Avenue South near Railroad Park in Birmingham."

https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingh...ion-funds.html

"Jefferson County will receive $2 million for a new overpass structure over Interstate 59/20 and a diverging diamond intersection at the northbound/southbound ramp at Exit 104. The county is providing nearly $2.7 million in matching funds."

I wonder where that new overpass will be on I-20/59..??

Those two project along with the widen of I-59 near Trussville, adding a lane to Hwy 280 from Homewood to Cahaba Heights, rehabing of RME (adding auxilary lanes, repaving and rebuilding the 2nd and 3rd/4th ave exits) from 1st Ave N to Homewood, and widening Grants Mill Road between Old Leeds Rd and I-459 to four lanes.

THE METROPOLITAN

i was really excited when this project was first announced (seems like 5 years ago now). great location and potential. however, after seeing it so often in person and after the whole fire debacle... it's just kind of meh now. the corner of 29th / 7th looks OK, but the rest is just typical of these lately. not much style or substance. and a missed opportunity in my opinion to not put some retail / restaurant space on the ground floor, which lakeview could easily absorb.
