Agreed. I think a rooftop putt putt course would be cool (like Ponce City Market in ATL).

For the Powell project, it appears like the apartments would be built in what's now the parking lot in close proximity to the steam plant. Then the taller building looks like it would actually be across 19th St from the Steam Plant where there's currently an electrical substation. Is that right? I guess APCO is moving that substation elsewhere?

Nevermind. That view of the taller is taken from 18th St. So it would be on the corner of 18th and 1st diagonally from Liv Parkside.

i do think the two can coexist, but i certainly can see how Sidewalk would see this as a threat:

Sidewalk Film ‘concerned’ about Alamo Drafthouse’s proximity to new cinema

interesting:

"Cook said Sidewalk initiated conversations with the leadership of the project to express their concerns and ask that they reconsider Alamo Drafthouse as the anchor tenant. When this initial request could not be fulfilled, they began looking for ways we could potentially co-exist to everyone’s mutual benefit, Cook said.

“As a result, Alabama Power and Orchestra Partners have committed to support Sidewalk in the years ahead through a meaningful Festival sponsorship, the hosting of an annual fundraising event and the exploration of a possible sales tax revenue program that would not only benefit Sidewalk, but also the greater theater district,” the statement continued.

BHM begins planning for $19M air cargo facility

Air cargo capacity is getting a needed boost at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

The Birmingham Airport Authority gave the green light Jan. 18 to design the new air cargo facility, which is expected to be ready for use at the end of 2023.

Airport officials expect the design phase for a 53,000-square-foot facility to last about nine months starting, followed by roughly 11 months of construction. Design and construction administration will cost $1.9 million. Construction will cost an estimated $17-19 million. CHA Consulting was hired for the design process.

“Approximately 30,000 square feet of the facility will be constructed and tailored to the move of a current tenant from the existing cargo facility,” BAA Chief Operating Officer Jim Payne said. “The remaining portion of the building will be mostly shell space and open to a new air cargo operator. This construction also includes additional apron expansion for ground service equipment and aircraft and vehicle parking.”

The new air cargo facility will offer build-to-suit space for prospective tenants, and the expanded apron will accommodate up to five aircraft parking positions.

Current tenants UPS, FedEx and Mountain Air (which uses FedEx feeder planes) each use the airport’s cargo facilities four to five times per week, which has resulted in roughly 1,600 to 1,700 total cargo operations annually for the last 10 years. The airport’s existing air cargo facilities are currently at 100% occupancy, and BAA has noted increased air cargo demand from current and prospective tenants.

A report created last summer on the airport’s air cargo needs forecasts over 2,000 total air cargo operations in 2025, and 2,635 total air cargo operations in 2040. That’s over 60% higher than the 1,600 cargo operations handled in 2021, based on the airport’s most recent statistical report.

Airport leaders expect construction to have minimal impact on air cargo operations.

While design work is ongoing, a new 5,000-square-foot air cargo shelter and paved access road at the South Air Cargo apron will become available for tenant use this April. It will provide a basic, metal structure with utilities and a restroom to give cargo operators added flexibility.
