My husband and I are considering moving to McCalla from Georgia. I am looking for an area within 20 miles of McCalla or a college. I am looking for an area similar to which we currently live (Suwanee, Georgia, which is about 30 miles north of ATL) that is family friendly with parks (we have 2 toddlers), has nearby shopping, and a low crime rate. I am also looking for a nearby college/university with a nursing program. I am looking into Birmingham but I'm not sure what neighborhoods are best. Any suggestions??

McCalla is a nice area with a variety of home options, typical suburban style shopping and easy access to the city and UAB.

Helena is a bit closer in. Probably rated better on schools and crime as it typical shows in top ten places to live... in Alabama or In the Birmingham area.

Can't go wrong with either other than Helena has no direct interstate access so you have to use two lane roads to get to the highway or insterstate. Hoover and Pelham and Alabaster are all right there next to Helena and within your 20 mile radius and even closer to UAB so they should be looked at as well.

I am not sure what type of Nursing program you are looking for but if you want to become an LPN or RN there is a school right in Bessemer (a few miles from McCalla) that has a nursing program. Lawson State has a Bessemer campus with a very good nursing program.

I am not familiar with the areas close to McCalla to live but I am sure there are communities such as you are looking for. I am a bit father out and enjoy being able to do things that one cannot do within the city or town limits. I like elbow room!
