My daughter lives in Southside area and loves it. If you live in Southside area and are driving to Graystone area, you are really going the opposite way of traffic which is heading downtown in the mornings, same with returning to Southside in afternoon. Your commute traffic should be minimal.

I'd go to Alabama Local News, Breaking News, Sports & Weather - al.com or Birmingham Real Estate - Birmingham Homes - Relocation. Are you renting or buying?

Since I've only been there for the interview, and my current company wants me to work my ENTIRE 30 day notice, I will be renting until I have time to really research a home to buy. I can't wait to begin my search to buy once I'm there -- there are TONS of great homes on the market.

Now that you've had toured around, is there any particular area you like?

So, I finally made a visit and fell further in love with the city than the first time! I really love the Crestwood area the most. Southside, 5 points and all areas have fantastic homes but I felt most at home with the Crestwood area. I made my way around the restaurant scene as well. Highlands was unbelievable! Can someone describe Homewood for me. Im not sure I got to see much of that but i cant recall.

As with any place you decide to live, you have to do your homework on the area. I like Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitors sites is not allowed...... Here is what they say about Birmingham

Birmingham, AL, violent crime, on a scale from 1 (low crime) to 10, is 7. Violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The US average is 3.
Birmingham, AL, property crime, on a scale from 1 (low) to 10, is 8. Property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but there is no force or threat of force against the victims. The US average is 3.

True, but if you're really going to do your research, you have to realize that the major crime is confined to specific areas of town. South Crestwood, Forest Park, etc., are perfectly safe.

"Well, I would consider us to be closer to high than moderate with no children living at home. We do not have to worry about the schools systems except as it relates to resale value."
What immediately jumps to mind is Forest Park and Redmont; which is on the top of Red Mtn between Highland Park and Mountain Brook- basically Mtn Brook without the schools or taxes. Redmont/Highland Park also has some great upper end condos. Pricewise, Forest Park ranchers as little as $180k and charming tudors arts and crafts etc 4s-7s. Redmont I would say 4s and up. In forest park i would look around clairmont, essex, glen view. Redmont around aberdeen, cahaba rd.
