I love reading historic diaries and journals by real people, especially those written during the 19th century American frontier period. I found this one fascinating: "A Secret to be Buried: The Diary and Life of Emily Hawley Gillespie". In this, her real diary which a scholar found in the U of I archives, she reveals herself to be kind of a B!!! She fights with all of her family members, makes her husband do her chores, and her 2 children never marry and stay on the farm with her. I loved it because it's proof positive that our ancestors are just as flawed as we are - and because it's a lot like a soap opera.
