I just read Counting by 7s - definitely a Young Adult book, but so well written, quirky, funny and relatable! I wish I had read it in middle school!!!

These are all good possibilities.

What I'd really like is a "coming of age" book similar to A Tree Grows in Brooklyn which is really too dated for her at this point.

Something truly real, and full of heart and grit. And no fantasy or magic or time travel which seems to flood the market for Y fiction.
What is her actual reading level/ability?

What are her interests? My DD (11) loves the aforementioned "Warriors" series because she adores cats.

Why no magic? "Harry Potter" is full of grit and difficult things and triluths about life. The same could be said about series like "Lord of the Rings", although those would be too difficult.

"The Goose Girl" by Shannon Hale is a wonderful coming of age story, but again, set in a magical world.

I also think that series do help kids read more, because they get invested in the characters and want to find out what happens next.
