Boston Mayor Marty Walsh on Late Night Bar & Restaurant Closing Time | BostInno

I'm really digging the direction this new mayor is going. World class and 2:00am last call does not go hand in hand.

I agree, but who said Boston is world class? It's a small city and that's the way I like it!

Geez, each to their own, but I can't even imagine being at a bar that late. Even in my 20s I rarely did that.

Boston is regarded as the Higher Education, Healthcare and Biotech capital of the world. Whether it wants to be world class or not, it kind of stumbled into that role.

Me neither, I am a family man now as well. But, its not up to us to tell anyone how late to stay out. I personally think there should be no last call at all, regulating vices like alcohol and how late/early you choose to drink is absolutely ridiculous.

Plus the revenue that these restaurants and bars will bring in from the added hours will do nothing but good for the business owners.

Between this, the casinos and the legalization of pot, this will bring more financial burder to the tax payers than the revenue it will raise. The costs will be increased social services for rehab, people coming to work from other states only to land up in part time jobs that pay no benefits. They will all need government supported health services, other benefits. Increased crime and needs for hiring more public safety.

Then there will be the students out late at the bars. Increased need for public transportation services. Or young people having a bit too much driving around drunk, bar fights and serious injury and more early tragic loss of life.

Nothing to be gained long term.

Yes, because everywhere else that has a slightly later last call has fallen into complete disrepair with no hope of turning back.

Last time I checked those bar fights and drunk driving accidents still happen. When you have an announcement at 1:45am that you need to pound as much booze as you can before 2am and then immediately flood the streets after closing minutes afterwards (while fighting over limited cabs) what do you think happens? Huge brawls on a nightly basis. Staggered, later closing times have been proven to work wonders in other places, I think its high time we try the same.

Where? And what evidence of this is there? I would like to read it. I'm not saying it isn't the case, but just living in other places with staggered and later bartimes I never noticed it being better. More like a rush out of one bar to head to another open one.

If you are thinking of NYC and Chicago, then yes those cities have always stayed up late, but not so much of a student population and no casinos in either one, more working adults of all ages. Also these are larger cities land wise and Boston is compact.

Very tragic if some person is working in a startup late hours leaving their office in the seaport district, trying to make something of themselves and gets injured or killed by a stumblebum drunk driver.

Also, another reason this would bum me out is if it applied to music venues. It is already horrible to have to wait to 12:30 for a headliner to go on. If that was pushed later I'd see even fewer bands.
