Hi,

I'm moving to Boston next month. I will be working at Dana Farber institute (44 Binney St, Boston, MA 02115). I'm trying to post an ad in craigslist to find a room. What's the closet area to Dana Farber? (Boston/cambridge/brookline, Northwest/merrimack, Metro west, North shore, South shore)

I wil be using public transportation. I also have a bike.

Thank you for your time,

Mission Hill is very walkable as are parts of Brookline near Coolidge Corner, and possibly Washington Square.

The Fenway neighborhood is walkable but getting very $. Kenmore area is also near. Back Bay is very $ but near Fenway. The St. Botolph area is small but nice, near Fenway and Back Bay.

Jamaica Plain has good bus access (39 bus).

What's your maximum rent?

Thanks for responding, maximum rent is $500. Under what area should I post my ad in craigslist? Is it Boston/cambridge/brookline or the other mentioned areas?

You want Boston/Cambridge/Brookline. But your max rent is really low, IMHO. You'd be looking for a room in a 3 bed that rents for $1,500, and I'm not sure you're going to find that. Or a 4 bed for $2,000.

That's going to be super tough. 500/month is pretty much take whatever you can get, pretty much wherever.

Maybe you can get lucky and find a room in Dorchester or something. Maybe Quincy. Anything south of Quincy becomes too suburan for rely on public transport if you can't drive to a train station.

Massco runs shuttles from JFK to LMA, and they are a pretty decent option. During peak commute times they run every ten-15 minutes generallly. They have routes from other areas as well.

You can't afford to live here if you're really limited to $500/month for rent. $750 maybe.

Going through your other posts, it seems you have a wife and child. That eliminates renting a room essentially.

Unfortunately, 500/month if you can't rent a room isn't enough for anywhere within 50 miles of Boston.

If I may be so bold- what are you doing at DFCI that pays so little that your rental budget is so tiny? Even their entry level jobs pay about 40k.

$500 is impossible anywhere near Boston, regardless of anything. Hate to say it, but it's just the way it is. Buffalo, however, sounds like it may be plausible.

If you do find a listing for 500, be aware that it is a scam. 100%.

I'm still by myself. I'm looking for a room for a couple of months until my wife arrives.

You're going to need to spend $750/month for something reasonable.
