1500 to 2000. You might find a 1 bedroom slightly under 1500, but it's going to nowhere near Longwood, and probably in a very unsafe area.

You're not getting a 1 bedroom. You're not even getting a studio. I'm sorry.

Yep. And more importantly what's the plan once the family gets here?

I didn't expect Boston to be this expensive. Is there away to live somewhere in the suburb and to commute to Dana Farber. What would be the cost for a one bedroom apartment or for a studio in the suburb with a proper public transportation. I will be in a fixed income ( 40 K ) for the next three years, then things might get better.

Unfortunately any money you save commuting from that far out will be eaten up by a more expensive commute.

If your wife won't be working I suggest you strongly reconsider this move. You can't support a family on $40,000/year here.

I don't think one bedrooms exist for under 1k, anywhere in Massachusetts, at least not anywhere near boston. Commuting from suburbs ain't cheap either. It's basically the same cost of living in the city with the different commute factored in, it boils down to preference. You pay to be close to public transportation.

If you were single, you could do fine, though even 40k for a single guy in this city isn't fantastic. But from what it sounds like, I'd strongly advise against moving to Boston.

What's considered enough for a family? What's the total income we should aim for if we look for a part-time job for my wife?

You need at least $80,000/year if not $100,000/year to support a family here.

OP, I'm assuming you're doing a post doc. If that's the case, I'd enlist the Dana Farber people for help. They probably have a dept that has info and maybe some listings.

That said, sadly, I have to agree with others. $500 is not going to cut it. Boston is an expensive area. Although the info you received here is accurate, I'd suggest contacting a realtor for professional advice.

It would surprise me if you found your own place for 750, even if you lived far out. And as someone mentioned, the savings would be consumed by the cost of using the commuter rail to get into the city. Dana Fraber likely has discounts on the commuter rail so that's good but you'll still be paying, and your commute time will be extended, and you'll be beholden to the commuter rail schedule and nuisances. Still, it is probably the best option for saving a few bucks. I've worked with a few people who live in New Hampshire and use the commuter rail. takes them about 1.5 hrs one way but they can relax once they're on the commuter rail.

500 for a place that is anywhere near Dana Farber isn't even good enough for renting a room, much less your own place.

Contact a realtor and consider places that are way out.

Best of luck
