$600k for a 2 bedroom condo? Doesn't sound cheap to me...

Not at all true. There are nice condos in the East side (near RISD / Brown) for 175k or less a one bedroom. I've looked at a couple in the past month. You're not getting that in Somerville, anywhere. The one bedrooms of similar type (gas range, hardwood floor, etc) are in the 300k+ range in Somerville, and that is in the more rundown areas.... nothing like the community near Brown/RISD.

Yes, you could get that in Lowell. But, Lowell is not Providence.

Buttonwoods is pretty nice though!
1.5 hour??!!! Even leaving at 5-530am, and leaving no later than 4?

Yeah, if you're driving Providence to Boston, I'd allow for 90 minutes at least during rush hour. I'd take the train myself.

The rush hour on 93 south out of the city definitely starts before 4pm.

Plenty of units for well under $600K out there that would be more than double for an equivalent unit in Boston.

11 Cady St #11, East Side of Prov, RI 02903 | MLS# 1060023 | Redfin - $500K+ in JP
259 Benefit St #4, East Side of Prov, RI 02903 | MLS# 1061254 | Redfin - $800K+ in Back Bay/South End

Cheaper parts like Dorchester, Roxbury, Hyde Park and Roslindale have plenty of poverty and crime, in many cases more than Providence.
We have MORE people than RI/PVD, so, yes, we have more impoverished areas.
We have better social services and the possibility for jobs than RI.

Hyde Park? Roslindale? High crime? Uh... maybe 10-15 years ago, but not today.

Dorchester? Isolated areas.

Roxbury? 10 years and it will be only in isolated areas.

Everyone, saying they NEED to move out of the city because they can't afford to buy, is not wanting to do the work that we all did to make Boston what they want it to be today.

The South End - CD's favorite scapegoat of overpriced everything - was nothing 25 years. It was today's Mattapan. Y'all could've scarfed up all the brownstones you wanted 'cos no one else would ever live in the scary city.
20 years ago - still scary.
15 years ago - better around the BCA but STILL scary.
10 years ago - yes, you can go to Washington St at night with a big dog.
5 years ago - its the overpriced hotmess you see today but it's still not OK by BMC or Pine Street Inn.

If people want a good neighborhood in Boston and can't afford a readymade Disney version, then make one. We did our part, go do your part.

You'll be OK getting OUT of Warwick at 5:30 am -- it takes me 45 minutes PVD/Branch Ave to Boston/JFK in the summer at 6:00am. Yes, the average speed is much more than the posted limit in the morning!

Going back home, though, is another thing.

I've tried 24S -> 495N ->95S when 95 was backed up. It was NOT a shortcut.

This is definitely not a fun commute. Brockton is in the middle of nowhere.

OP is going to Brockton. No train service.

You'll be fine in the morning if you leave that early - it will be a "speed limit" commute which is about an hour. Coming home will be a little longer since you'll hit PVD right around rush hour. I was thinking 90 minutes in the heaviest rush hour traffic (i.e. Friday evenings at 5pm).

Meaning the limit is whatever speed you're going??

Cars and passenger trucks pass me by when cranking along at 75mph on 95N ... I just turn NPR up a little louder and pretend I'm keeping up.
